Tropical Storm ‘Chris’ Makes Landfall in Veracruz, Bringing Intense Rainfall to Multiple Mexican States
Tropical Storm ‘Chris’ made landfall in the Mexican town of Lechuguillas, located in the southern state of Veracruz, on Sunday night, according to reports from the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of Mexico. The SMN detailed that the storm hit the municipality of Vega de Alatorre at 10:50 p.m. (04:50 GMT) and presented maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (km/h), gusts of 85 km/h, and moving west at 20 km/h.
The third hydrometeorological phenomenon of the 2024 season brought extraordinary rains to Hidalgo, Puebla, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, and Veracruz; torrential rains to Oaxaca and Tamaulipas; and intense rainfall to Campeche, Chiapas, Nuevo León, and Tabasco. The SMN also forecast wind gusts of 70 to 90 km/h, possible formation of waterspouts, and waves between two and four meters high on the coasts of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Tabasco.
Authorities urged the population, tourists, and maritime navigation to heed official warnings issued by the SMN and follow recommendations from Civil Protection while taking extreme precautions against rainfall
