In a shocking turn of events, Chromatic BF, the United States’ representative in the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup, passed away suddenly on April 18th. The news was announced by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) shortly after the horse had helped put the US on the podium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Chromatic BF, an Oldenburg gelding owned by breeder KC Branscomb and Branscomb Farms LLC, had been competing in Riyadh with rider Jill Humphrey. On Wednesday, they finished 12th but were in fifth place overall. On Thursday evening, they finished third in the second round of jumping competition with a time of 48.36 seconds. Unfortunately, following their performance, Chromatic BF collapsed and died in the stables.
Immediately after the collapse, U.S. Equestrian veterinary staff and FEI veterinarians rushed to attend to Chromatic BF’s needs. Despite their best efforts to resuscitate him, he could not be saved according to an announcement from FEI. Samples have already been taken from Chromatic BF for postmortem analysis as per FEI veterinary regulations.
The US Equestrian Federation expressed its deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragic event: Jill Humphrey, KC Branscomb and Branscomb Farms LLC, groom Pepe Rodriguez and all connections associated with Chromatic BF.” The Federation also stated that it will provide support to Jill Humphrey as she grieves for her beloved horse companion during this difficult time.
This unfortunate incident marks a significant loss for both equestrian sports and animal welfare communities around the world as we remember Chromatic BF’s achievements and contributions to sport while mourning his untimely end.
