Towson senior swimmer Brian Benzing has been recognized for his outstanding performance in both the classroom and the pool. On Wednesday, he was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America second team for his impressive 3.76 GPA while majoring in sports marketing.
Benzing has been a standout performer throughout his swimming career at Towson. He was named the CAA Men’s Swimmer of the Year for four consecutive seasons, earning All-America honors at the NCAA Championship in several events. In the 100 breast, he finished second with a record-setting time of 50.59, and was an honorable mention All-American in the 200 breast, setting a CAA record with a time of 1:52.71 in the prelims. Additionally, Benzing placed 23rd in the 200 IM at the NCAA’s, setting another CAA record with a time of 1:42.82.
At the CAA Championship, Benzing was named Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet for three years running. He won the 100 breast for four straight years and set a meet record in the 200 IM. He also played a key role on Towson’s 800 free relay team that set a meet record in the 200 free event. Overall, Benzing earned six medals at the championship and cemented his status as one of college swimming’s top competitors.
