Too Much Caffeine: How Excessive Coffee Intake Can Harm Your Health

Drinking too much coffee can have several negative effects on health. The heat from the beverage can harm tooth enamel, making teeth more susceptible to decay and staining. Adding too much sugar can also lead to chronic inflammation and blood pressure issues. However, moderate caffeine intake may reduce the risk of memory loss and cognitive decline.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), adults should limit their daily caffeine intake to 400 mg, which is equivalent to about 4-5 cups of coffee. Consuming more than 1,000 mg of caffeine can lead to stress and restlessness. Additionally, drinking coffee can lead to frequent urination, potentially causing dehydration. It is crucial for coffee drinkers to stay hydrated by drinking about two liters of water per day to avoid adverse health effects like fatigue, headaches, and impaired cognitive function.

While adding sugar to coffee may provide a sweet taste, it contributes to fat accumulation in the body. This can lead to fatty liver disease, diabetes, heart disease, chronic inflammation, high blood pressure, dehydration, and dry skin. Therefore, opting for pure coffee without added sugar provides numerous health benefits without these negative side effects.

It’s recommended that people who want a good night’s sleep limit their caffeine intake or avoid drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages within six hours of bedtime. Consuming too much caffeine before bedtime can result in reduced sleep time, insomnia, headaches, anxiety
