Sources say AAC considering Tim Pernetti, sports executive, for next commissioner

Tim Pernetti, Potential New AAC Commissioner: Balancing Expansion and Media Rights Deals

The American Athletic Conference is seeking a new commissioner, and sources have revealed that they are considering Tim Pernetti for the position. Pernetti, who currently serves as the president of IMG Academy, has a wealth of experience in the college sports industry. He previously held the position of athletic director at Rutgers and has a strong television background. Additionally, Pernetti has professional experience from his time as the Chief Business Officer for New York City FC of the MLS.

Pernetti has been involved in high-profile college searches and is well-positioned to fill the shoes of Mike Aresco, who recently retired after serving as the only commissioner in the AAC’s 11-year history. The AAC has undergone significant changes recently with the addition of Rice, UTSA, North Texas, FAU, UAB, and Charlotte to the conference. The league currently has a television contract with ESPN that extends through the 2031-32 academic year.

With his diverse background in television, college sports and on-campus experiences make him well suited for this role. He started his career at CSTV (now known as ESPN) and later worked for ABC Sports and ABC Enhanced TV before moving into executive roles within major media companies like NBC Universal and ViacomCBS. Pernetti’s previous experience working with Big Ten Network also makes him an attractive candidate for this role as he will bring insights on how to leverage media rights deals to drive revenue growth.

The trend of non-traditional hires in the commissioner space is evident with examples such as Brett Yormark of Big 12 and Jim Phillips of ACC. With his unique set of skills and experiences, Pernetti would be an excellent fit for this role as he can lead the league to take advantage of its recent expansion by leveraging its new markets while maintaining its existing partnerships with ESPN.
