Cancer rates soar by 80% among young adults

The Surge in Young Cancer Cases: It’s Time to Take Action and Stay Healthy

Young people’s cancer rates have surged by about 80%, despite many believing they are immune to the disease, according to recent studies. While cancer is less common among those aged 20-44, it still affects a significant number of young individuals. Global research has shown that the proportion of young cancer sufferers has increased dramatically, with diagnoses rising by 79% between 1990 and 2019.

In Israel, testicular cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, malignant melanoma, breast cancer, and thyroid cancer are some of the most common types of cancer among young people. To reduce the risk of developing cancer, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential. This includes avoiding smoking and secondhand smoke, eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, limiting alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy weight and practicing safe sun exposure.

Early detection is critical for successful treatment of cancer. Symptoms such as unexplained pain, weight loss or gain, fatigue, lumps or swelling in various parts of the body should prompt a visit to a healthcare provider immediately. The fear of being diagnosed with cancer should not delay seeking medical attention as early detection can significantly improve survival rates.

The Association to Fight Cancer offers support services for young people battling cancer. These include support groups where individuals can share their experiences and receive emotional support; workshops that provide education on coping strategies; counseling services that offer psychological help; informational resources that provide information on various aspects of cancer; teleinformation hotline where individuals can call for assistance and guidance and website where they can access online resources. It is crucial for young people to take charge of their health and seek medical help if they experience any concerning symptoms.

In conclusion, young people need to be aware that their risk for developing certain types of cancer is higher than they previously thought. By taking proactive measures such as leading a healthy lifestyle and getting regular check-ups when needed, young people can lower their risk for developing this deadly disease.
