In recent years, a post-colonial approach has gained traction on campuses. This perspective divides the world into categories based on gender, sexuality, and race, with those who were affected by colonialism (blacks, Africans, Muslims, Asians) and those who perpetrated it (whites) playing key roles. Whites are often viewed as “privileged” or “victims,” while indigenous minorities are celebrated as heroes. There is leniency towards these minorities when they break the law or engage in terrorism. Jews, labeled as white-privileged, face similar perception challenges, with Israel being protested against as part of the old order.
Academia has enthusiastically adopted principles of post-colonialism and identity politics, with truth and facts becoming dependent on race and gender. As a result, courses promoting hatred of Israel, conferences featuring Palestinian organizations and progressive Jews who support academic boycotts of Israel are becoming more common on university campuses.
Inspired by the hope of ending Israeli actions through similar means as in South Africa, a global movement emerged twenty years ago advocating for an economic, cultural, diplomatic, and academic boycott against Israel. This movement heavily focuses on campus activities using human rights terminology and forming alliances with left-wing human rights organizations.
Anti-Israel sentiment is influenced by media coverage in progressive media outlets that often depict Israel as the villain and Palestinians as victims. Misinformation spread through social media further contributes to negative perceptions of Israel among young people on campuses. Efforts to combat biases have been fragmented due to conflicting messages from various government ministries and a lack of coordination between different groups involved in this issue.
