The Power of Touch: Research Reveals Benefits for Physical and Mental Health

According to new research, physical touch and hugs have a positive impact on both physical and mental health for people of all ages. A comprehensive review of 212 studies involving 12,966 participants found that touch can reduce pain, depression, and anxiety. The most effective form of touch are head and face touches, followed by shorter and more frequent touches.

While touch from humans is the most beneficial, researchers found that touch from animals can also be beneficial. Newborns especially benefit greatly from parental touch, but as we age, familiarity with the touch becomes less important. However, consent is crucial for the effectiveness of touch.

Researchers emphasize that touch should be optimized for maximum benefits. Spending more time in physical contact can enhance overall health as it is the first sense to develop and has a significant impact on well-being. So go ahead and hug your loved ones, just make sure you both give your consent for mutual benefit.
