Albanian literary icon Ismail Kadare passed away on Monday at the age of 88, following a cardiac arrest that led to his hospitalization in Tirana. Kadare, who had been rushed to the hospital, was widely regarded as a potential contender for the Nobel Literature Prize.
Kadare’s passing has been mourned by many in Albania and beyond, including President Bajram Begaj, who expressed condolences on behalf of the country. Begaj described Kadare as a “genius of letters and a spiritual emancipator” whose contributions to literature would be deeply missed.
Onufri Publishing House editor Bujar Hudhri confirmed Kadare’s death and shared details about his final days. According to Hudhri, Kadare died peacefully in his sleep after being rushed to the emergency room due to a cardiac arrest on Monday morning.
Kadare gained international recognition with the publication of his novel “The General of the Dead Army” in 1963, during a time when Albania was still under communist rule under dictator Enver Hoxha. Despite this difficult period for Albania, Kadare’s work resonated with readers around the world and helped pave the way for greater freedom and democracy in the region.
In 1990, just months before communism fell in Albania following student protests, Kadare left the country and moved to France. He lived there until his recent return to Tirana last year, where he continued working on new projects and receiving numerous awards for his extensive body of work. In addition to being honored with titles from France’s highest institutions, including Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor from French President Emmanuel Macron, Kadare also received recognition from organizations around the world for his contributions to literature.
