The Fall of a Star: Tim Anderson’s Struggles with Injury and Performance in 2023
In the 2023 season, Tim Anderson, a shortstop for the Miami Marlins, struggled with his performance. Despite signing a one-year, $5 million deal to try and rebuild his value, Anderson’s batting average remained at .214 and he made nine errors at shortstop over 65 games with the team. His struggles ultimately resulted in him being designated for assignment.
Anderson was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2013 and had a successful career there, earning two All-Star appearances and winning a Silver Slugger award. However, his performance did not meet expectations in the 2023 season, leading the White Sox to decline his option. After joining the Marlins, Anderson’s struggles continued until he was eventually designated for assignment.
One possible explanation for Anderson’s decline in 2023 could be the knee injury he sustained early in the season while playing for Chicago. After spraining his MCL in April, Anderson struggled to regain form upon returning to the field in May. The injury affected his body mechanics when swinging at bat which impacted his performance on the field. Anderson admitted that he found it difficult to find comfort at the plate after sustaining this injury.
Moving forward, Anderson will need to make significant changes to his game if he wants any chance of returning to professional baseball again. Without improvement in his skills and abilities, his future prospects may be uncertain as it could put an end to his career
