The General Services Administration (GSA) has recently appointed Larry Bafundo as the new permanent executive director for the Technology Modernization Fund (TMF). Bafundo, who previously served as the TMF’s deputy executive director, will now take on this leadership role.
Bafundo is a recognized technologist with extensive experience leading complex digital initiatives in both the public and private sectors. Prior to joining the GSA in January, he oversaw the Department of Labor’s modernization efforts, including a $2 billion project to upgrade unemployment insurance systems. He also served at GSA’s 18F unit as a product manager, focusing on transformation efforts for crime data collection and reporting.
In an email obtained by FedScoop, GSA Deputy Administrator Katy Kale expressed confidence in Bafundo’s abilities and highlighted the importance of investing in IT modernization projects through the TMF. She emphasized that the TMF team will continue to deliver meaningful results for both GSA and other federal agencies.
The appointment of Bafundo comes at a critical time when there are calls from federal IT leaders and lawmakers to revitalize the TMF, as the program is nearing the end of its America Rescue Plan funding. However, his promotion signals a continued commitment to advancing IT modernization efforts within the federal government. His experience and leadership will be crucial in driving innovation and delivering secure and seamless services to the American public.
