Surge in Migration Patterns in Latin America: An Analysis of the Data

In recent years, there have been significant changes in migration patterns across the region. According to reports from various countries, there has been an influx of migrants crossing their borders. In Darien, Panama’s Ministry of Public Security reported that between January 1 and March 31, 2024, a total of 109,069 migrants had crossed the Darien region. Among those with the highest number of entries were Venezuelans, Ecuadorians, Haitians, and Colombians.

Meanwhile, in Honduras, the National Migration Institute recorded that between January and February 2024, a total of 87,852 migrants had crossed the country. This represents a significant increase of 125.6% compared to the same period in 2023. The majority of these migrants were Venezuelans, Cubans, Haitians, and Ecuadorians with a smaller percentage coming from other countries.

In Colombia statistics show that among Venezuelan migrants in the country are women who make up more than half (52%) of all Venezuelan migrants in Colombia. Most of them fall within the productive age group of 18-39 years old. A significant portion of these migrants have been granted Temporary Protection Permit (PPT), which gives them access to essential services such as identification, health education and justice.

Cuba has seen its nationals being returned to their homeland from various countries in the region through repatriation efforts between January and March 2024. A total of 276 Cubans were repatriated during this time period in 22 operations
