Steelers Release Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky: What it Means for Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph

The Steelers have announced that they have released quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, giving him a head start on free agency. Trubisky, 29, joined the team before the 2022 season as their bridge quarterback but was replaced by Kenny Pickett after only four games. In his first season in Pittsburgh, he started one other game and three games this season when Pickett was injured, but eventually was replaced by Mason Rudolph. In his two seasons with Pittsburgh, Trubisky went 2-5 with eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Trubisky’s departure leaves Pickett as the only quarterback on the roster, though the Steelers are interested in re-signing Rudolph. Before joining Pittsburgh, Trubisky went 29-21 in Chicago after being drafted second overall in 2017, throwing 64 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. He then backed up Josh Allen in Buffalo during the 2021 season before landing in Pittsburgh.
