Staying Flu-Free: Why Pregnant Women in Vietnam Should Prioritize Flu Vaccinations Year-Round

Vietnam’s tropical monsoon climate may seem like the perfect excuse to skip flu shots, but experts say that’s not the case. While influenza cases peak in March-April and September-October in Vietnam, they can occur year-round, and recent hospital reports have seen an increase in cases of influenza A and B, along with complications.

Pregnant women are particularly at risk of serious complications from the flu, including birth defects, premature birth, low birth weight, and stillbirth. That’s why getting a flu shot is highly recommended for pregnant women to protect themselves and their newborns. Studies show that flu vaccination can reduce the death rate by 70-80% and decrease hospitalizations and complications related to the flu.

It’s also important for pregnant women to get their flu shots during the second or third trimester to protect themselves from serious complications. There are various types of influenza vaccines available in Vietnam, including quadrivalent and trivalent vaccines that can protect against different strains of the virus.

When flu symptoms appear, it’s crucial to take precautions such as avoiding crowded places, wearing a mask, and avoiding contact with high-risk individuals. Resting properly, eating a healthy diet, and staying hydrated can help the body recover from illness more quickly. So even during hot weather in Vietnam, it’s important to stay vigilant about getting your flu shot to prevent illness and its complications.
