An armed woman opened fire in a mega evangelical church in Texas, killing herself and injuring two people including a 5-year-old child. The shooting took place immediately after the English service had ended and the Spanish service was about to begin. The woman fired several magazines and claimed to have a bomb while the congregation sought shelter from the bullets.
Police evacuated the entire shopping center where the church is located after rumors spread of a second attacker, which turned out to be unfounded. Church televangelist Joel Osteen said he didn’t know why such an event occurred but assured that “God is in control.” The police have not yet released any information on the identity or motivation of the woman, who was wearing a trench coat and backpack, or her relationship with the injured child. Her car was also searched for explosives.
According to research by Lifeway Research, an association led by the Southern Baptist Convention, 55% of pastors have created response plans for possible armed attacks during religious services.
