Senators Markey and Warren Call Out Steward Health Care for Financial Problems in Hearing

During a hearing held at the Massachusetts State House, Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren criticized Steward Health Care and its CEO Ralph de la Torre for the financial problems at the company’s Massachusetts hospitals. They attributed these problems to corporate greed and mismanagement.

Both senators accused Steward Health Care, along with Cerberus Capital Management and Medical Properties Trust, of failing in their responsibilities to patients, providers, and communities. They specifically called out de la Torre and other corporate executives for prioritizing profits over the well-being of those who rely on the healthcare services provided by the company’s hospitals.

Markey, who chairs the subcommittee on Primary Health and Retirement Security, made these comments during the hearing. By holding this hearing and speaking out against the actions of Steward Health Care and its leadership, Markey and Warren are shedding light on the challenges facing the for-profit company and the implications it has for the future of healthcare in Massachusetts. Their focus on the role of corporate greed in exacerbating these issues highlights the need for greater accountability and transparency in the healthcare industry.
