Sarah’s experiment is sure to captivate both parents and students alike. If you want to try it yourself, all you need is a small piece of potassium (available on Amazon), a paper towel, and a beaker with water. Remember to put on eye and hand protection before conducting the experiment.
To perform the experiment, first, dry the potassium on the paper towel. Then, place it in a bowl of water and step back. The potassium will explode in the bowl of water, generating heat and potentially catching fire.
The science behind this experiment is that potassium reacts with water (H2O) to form potassium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. This reaction is exothermic, meaning it generates a lot of heat. It’s important to take precautions when conducting this experiment to avoid injury or damage to property.
