Saving Nature: The Environmental Quality Incentives Program and the Migratory Bird Resurgence Initiative in Action

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is currently inviting agricultural producers to enroll in the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) in a bid to support them in protecting and improving natural resources and habitat for migratory birds and other avian species. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is investing nearly $11 million in the EQIP – Migratory Bird Resurgence Initiative (MBRI), which will be available to farmers in several states, including California, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas.

In Arkansas, NRCS will provide up to $4 million in financial assistance for the MBRI in fiscal year 2024. State Conservationist Mike Sullivan stressed the importance of creating habitat on private lands to sustain migratory bird populations and enhance climate resiliency and carbon stewardship on working lands. By providing more nesting, food, and resting areas for migratory birds, the initiative aims to improve habitat for wildlife and promote natural resource conservation.

Agricultural producers who are interested in receiving financial assistance should submit their applications by May 17th for funding consideration this year. However, it’s worth noting that while applications for EQIP financial assistance are accepted year-round; specific program deadlines are in place for ranking and funding opportunities within each state. Overall, this initiative presents an excellent opportunity for farmers to take action towards preserving natural resources while also supporting migratory bird populations.
