Dutch broadcaster RTL has announced the termination of their collaboration with presenter Matthijs van Nieuwkerk. The decision was made following a report by the Van Rijn Commission, which investigated misconduct on the work floor at the program ‘De wereld draait door’ that Van Nieuwkerk hosted for fifteen years.
The report, which was prompted by an article in the Volkskrant about inappropriate behavior by Van Nieuwkerk and the work culture at the show, found that more than 1,484 employees had experienced inappropriate behavior in the past year. With three out of four respondents reporting being targeted or witnessing such behavior.
Van Nieuwkerk expressed his preference for freedom and RTL respected his decision given the circumstances. The collaboration with RTL was set to continue, with Van Nieuwkerk hosting a talk show on Sundays and being considered for a program about the Olympic Games from Paris. However, with the termination now definitively confirmed, he will no longer be working with the broadcaster.
RTL wished Van Nieuwkerk success for his future endeavors in light of the situation.
