Verizon, ADOT, and MAG’s pilot program earns transportation award for innovative technology use

Revolutionizing Transportation Communication: Verizon Public Sector’s V2X Pilot Program Wins TSMO Award

Verizon Public Sector has been recognized for its pilot program in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the Maricopa Association of Governments. The program, which was awarded the Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) Award in the Emerging Trends and Technologies category, tested a new vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology in Maricopa County, Arizona.

TJ Fox, Senior Vice President of Industrial IoT and Automotive at Verizon Business, highlighted the significance of the TSMO award in showcasing the potential of V2X technology to revolutionize how state and local governments communicate with drivers nationwide. The award validates the viability of this innovative technology and its ability to enhance communication between vehicles and transportation infrastructure.

The pilot program aimed to utilize V2X capabilities to deliver time-sensitive safety information between vehicles on Arizona’s interstate and state highway systems. By testing and validating the effectiveness of transmitting critical safety notices to drivers efficiently, the program serves as a stepping stone towards a future where vehicles can interact with transportation infrastructure seamlessly.

Susan Anderson, Systems Technology Group Manager for ADOT’s Transportation Systems Management and Operations division, emphasized the importance of positioning for the integration of V2X technology into transportation systems. The program virtualized ADOT’s roadside units and leveraged public Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC) infrastructure to optimize the communication of timely traffic information to drivers.

The pilot program, which took place from December 2021 to May 2022, demonstrates the potential of V2X technology to enhance road safety and improve communication between vehicles and transportation infrastructure. For more information on the program, visit
