Clariant and Lummus receive contract for catalyst technology

Revolutionary Partnership Between Clariant, Lummus Technology, and Huizhou Boeko Materials Co. Ltd.: Developing a Highly Efficient Process for the Dehydrogenation of Isobutane

Huizhou Boeko Materials Co. Ltd. has awarded Clariant and its process partner, Lummus Technology, with the CATOFIN catalyst and process technology for the dehydrogenation of isobutane at their new plant in Huizhou City, China. The first-of-its-kind project will produce 550,000 tpy of net isobutylene, which will be used as a feedstock for downstream processes in the production of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE).

Clariant is responsible for supplying the tailor-made catalyst for this project, while Lummus Technology holds an exclusive license for the process technology. This partnership between Clariant and Lummus Technology marks a significant advancement in catalyst and process technology for the dehydrogenation of isobutane.

The highly efficient CATOFIN process uses fixed-bed reactors and operates at optimum reactor pressure and temperature to maximize catalytic dehydrogenation of isobutane for high yields of isobutylene at low investment and operating costs. Jens Cuntze, Business President Catalysts and APAC at Clariant, commented on this partnership: “We are delighted to deliver our industry leading CATOFIN catalyst to this first Huizhou Boeko plant and look forward to a fruitful partnership.”

This collaboration between Clariant, Lummus Technology, and Huizhou Boeko Materials Co. Ltd., aims to enhance efficiency and productivity in the production of isobutylene, supporting downstream processes in the production of MTBE. The selection of CATOFIN technology for this project demonstrates confidence in the reliability and performance of the catalyst and process technology provided by Clariant and Lummus Technology.
