Countdown to the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta: Anticipated Boost to Economy

Return of the Sternwheel Regatta: Charleston’s Economy and Community Benefit from Spectacular Event

The Charleston Sternwheel Regatta is set to make a triumphant return in 2024, with local businesses like Fife Street Brewing preparing for the influx of visitors expected during the event. General Manager John Query stated that they have quadrupled their inventory, stocked up on beer and are ready to keep the air conditioning running high to accommodate the crowds.

The Charleston Sternwheel Regatta has been absent from the city’s summers since 2009 but made a spectacular comeback in 2022. The event was hailed as “Charleston’s Super Bowl” by Mayor Amy Goodwin, who described it as bringing life and vitality back to the city. With the event generating tens of millions of dollars for the local economy, Mayor Goodwin emphasized its positive impact on the city. Last year saw a $37 million return on investment, up from $31 million in 2022.

Mayor Goodwin acknowledged that unpredictable factors like Mother Nature can play a role in the success of an outdoor event like the Sternwheel Regatta. However, she expects over 200,000 people to visit Charleston during the regatta this year. Query noted that summer events like bike races and FestivALL also contribute to driving sales at Fife Street Brewing, not just the Regatta. “We really appreciate all of our local customers and everybody we’ve met from out of town that come in for these events,” he said.

The Charleston Sternwheel Regatta will take place from July 3-7 this year, providing a much-needed boost to local businesses and bringing the community together for a week of fun and entertainment.
