Renowned Basketball Coach John Montgomery Joins Chris Acker’s Coaching Staff at Long Beach State

John Montgomery, a renowned college basketball coach and son of Mike Montgomery, has been appointed to the coaching staff at Long Beach State by Chris Acker. The former associate head coach at Hawaii will be responsible for overseeing the team’s defense and post players.

Montgomery, who had been with Hawaii since 2015-16 and was the last remaining staff member from Eran Ganot’s first season, expressed his gratitude to his former colleague for the opportunity to work with him again. “I appreciate Chris’s faith in me and I am excited about this new chapter in my career,” he said.

Acker, who was named head coach of Long Beach State in early April, has assembled a talented coaching staff that includes Anthony Santos from Cal State Fullerton, Phillip Scott from Premier Prep/San Diego City, DOBO Ali Tavakol from San Diego State, and Director of player relations Josh Calbert from Little Rock.

The two coaches had previously worked together as assistants under Ganot for two seasons in Manoa before reuniting at Long Beach State. With Montgomery joining him at LBSU, the two will now face each other as conference rivals at least twice a season, with one matchup taking place at the Stan Sheriff Center.

This appointment is significant as it marks another step forward for Montgomery’s career path in college basketball. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to Acker’s coaching staff at Long Beach State and is expected to make a valuable contribution to the team’s success in the upcoming seasons.
