Mother awarded $1.5 million after winning case against Zumbro Valley Health Center following son’s death

Red Wing Mother Receives $1.5 Million in Lawsuit against Zumbro Valley Health Center for Son’s Death during Detox Treatment

Jill Adams, a Red Wing mother, received $1.5 million in a lawsuit against Zumbro Valley Health Center following the death of her son, Caleb Malek, in 2021. Malek was 23 at the time of his passing and had tested positive for fentanyl, Percocet, and THC in his sober living home. He sought detox treatment at Zumbro Valley Health Center.

Court records revealed that jurors found the Rochester health center negligent in its care and treatment of Malek. The lawsuit alleged that employees did not adhere to the policy of checking on Malek every 15 minutes and failed to adequately screen him for drugs upon admission. Additionally, it was claimed that Zumbro Valley failed to train its staff to recognize signs of a breathing problem, which may have contributed to Malek’s death.

The verdict form for the case was dated March 22, 2024, with the jury ruling in favor of Adams. Stories like this can be found in the KTTC app where more news and updates can be accessed. Copyright 2024 KTTC. All rights reserved.
