Protecting Intellectual Property: The Associated Press’s Strict Guidelines for Journalists

As a journalist, it is important to understand the copyright laws and respect the rights of others. The Associated Press (AP) has strict guidelines for the use of their materials, which include copyright protection. Any material from the AP must be published with their permission, and cannot be reprinted, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed without their explicit consent.

The AP also has strict guidelines for how their materials can be used. Their text, photo, graphic, audio and/or video material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten for broadcast or publication or redistributed directly or indirectly in any medium. This includes storing any portion of their materials on a computer except for personal and noncommercial use.

As a journalist it is important to understand that using AP materials without permission can result in legal consequences. It is important to always obtain permission before using any copyrighted material in an article or publication.
