Nintendo focuses on delivering unique value in games that cannot be replicated by technology alone, without plans to use GenAI.

Nintendo’s Cautious Approach to AI in Game Development: Maintaining Human Touch Amidst Technology Advancements

Nintendo has a unique perspective on AI and its role in game development. While many companies are looking to incorporate LLMs and similar technologies, Nintendo recognizes the importance of copyright issues that arise when using models trained on others’ work.

During a recent Q&A session with investors, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa shared his thoughts on the matter. He pointed out that AI has always been closely connected to game development, but it now includes generative AI, which is becoming increasingly popular among investors and executives seeking to cut costs. While Furukawa recognizes the potential of Generative AI in terms of creativity, Nintendo has no intentions of using it in their first-party games.

Nintendo’s stance sets them apart from other gaming giants like Electronic Arts and Take-Two, who fully embrace LLMs and AI technologies. Electronic Arts sees a significant positive impact on their development processes from generative AI. Take-Two acknowledges that AI tools can enhance efficiency but emphasizes that true hits are created by human genius, not just data sets and technology.

Ubisoft, on the other hand, has been actively developing proprietary generative tools such as the NEO NPC project, which allows players to engage in meaningful conversations with in-game characters. Despite the advancements in AI, the human touch remains vital in creating successful and memorable games.

Overall, while many companies are exploring ways to incorporate AI into their game development processes, Nintendo continues to prioritize creative control and maintain exclusivity through its unique approach to this technology.
