Yankees acquire INF Jon Berti from Marlins following DJ LeMahieu’s foot injury

New York Yankees Acquire Proven Infielder Jon Berti in Blockbuster Trade with Miami Marlins

In 2023, the New York Yankees made a significant acquisition by trading for infielder Jon Berti from the Miami Marlins. The move came after it was announced that DJ LeMahieu would start the season on the injured list with a bruised foot. The trade involved a three-team agreement, with the Yankees sending outfield prospect John Cruz to the Marlins and catcher Ben Rortvedt to the Tampa Bay Rays. In return, the Yankees received Jon Berti while the Rays acquired outfield prospect Shane Sasaki.

Berti had an impressive season with the Marlins in 2022, contributing significantly to their unexpected playoff run. His batting average of .294, on-base percentage of .344, and slugging percentage of .405 earned him a career-best 103 OPS+. Berti played five different positions during his time with Miami, but spent most of his time at shortstop and third base. He was considered an above-average fielder at both positions based on stats like outs above average and defensive runs saved.

In New York, Berti is expected to primarily play at third base, where he will replace DJ LeMahieu. The other infield positions are set with Anthony Volpe at shortstop, Gleyber Torres at second base, and Anthony Rizzo at first base. Although Oswaldo Cabrera was initially considered for third base, he will likely serve as a backup. While Berti has experience in the outfield, the Yankees already have a strong lineup with players like Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Alex Verdugo, and Trent Grisham.

The trade did not involve giving up top prospects for Berti. John Cruz is ranked as the 28th best prospect in the Yankees’ system according to MLB Pipeline while Shane Sasaki is not in the top 30 rankings. This move shows that the Yankees were willing to give up prospects for experienced players who can help their team win now rather than waiting for them to develop over time
