New World Record: 92-Pound Grass Carp Discovered in Louisiana Lake Concordia!

A remarkable 92-pound grass carp, measuring 49.5 inches in length, was recently caught by biologists from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) during their routine spring sampling of Lake Concordia. If caught in a fishing competition, this catch could have broken world records.

This impressive discovery surpasses the “all-tackle” world record set in Bulgaria in 2009 by four pounds. It would have also tied the current world record set by the Bowfishing Association of America in Alabama in 2015. The grass carp’s remarkable size is not its only unique feature; it has never been seen before in Lake Concordia, as per the LDWF. Biologist Shelby Richard stated that this carp most likely migrated through Cocodrie Bayou and the control structure into Lake Concordia.

Grass carp are plant-eating fish that are native to Asia and have been utilized in the United States since the 1960s to manage aquatic vegetation in inland bodies of water. This discovery highlights the importance of continued monitoring and management of these invasive species to ensure their impact on ecosystems is minimized.
