New Technology and Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program Launched by Austin Community College and Texas Department of Information Resources

In an effort to address shortages in the state’s information resources, Austin Community College (ACC) and the Texas Department of Information Resources have joined forces to establish a new technology and cybersecurity apprenticeship program for students. On June 28th, ACC hosted an official signing ceremony at its Highland Campus to kick off the program.

The program aims to provide students with practical career skills while furthering their education in a hands-on environment. Over the past year, more than 100 students have completed apprenticeships in various fields such as health sciences and manufacturing. The partnership is in line with House Bill 584, which became effective on September 1, 2023 and allows state information departments to collaborate with public junior colleges or technical institutes to address these shortages.

Texas Representative Donna Howard expressed optimism about the partnership, highlighting the potential benefits for ACC students and the state departments involved. She emphasized the value of creating positions in IT cybersecurity that do not require a four-year degree but instead focus on relevant experience and knowledge.

In the pilot program, the Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) will serve as the employer, with ACC planning to replicate this model with future program partners from the business and industry sectors. ACC’s next partnership will be with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
