New Jersey Now Officially Supports LGBTQ+ Businesses with New Law

On Wednesday, Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill into law that formally establishes a process for certifying LGBTQ+-owned businesses in New Jersey. This legislation builds upon an existing executive order signed earlier this year, providing LGBTQ+ businesses with access to local contracting opportunities and state agency initiatives. The move is seen as a positive step towards promoting diversity and inclusion in the business community.

Dr. Chris Awwad, the Executive Director of the LGBTQ+ Health & Wellness Center at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus, discussed the importance of providing specialized care for the LGBTQ+ community on Tuesday. The center aims to address the unique health and wellness needs of LGBTQ+ individuals in a safe and inclusive environment.

Gus Penaranda, Executive Director of the NJ Pride Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the significance of the new law in sending a welcoming message to businesses looking to invest in New Jersey. By codifying the certification program in statute, the state ensures that LGBTQ+-owned businesses will have continued support and recognition for years to come. To be eligible for certification, businesses must be majority-owned by LGBTQ+ individuals who are actively involved in the management of the company.
