Which countries have recognized a Palestinian state?

New Horizons: The International Recognition of Palestine as a Sovereign Nation

Countries around the world have unanimously recognized a Palestinian state as a sovereign nation, with the exception of a few countries in Western Europe, North America, Australia, Japan, and South Korea. The declaration of an independent Palestinian state was made by Yasser Arafat in 1988 following the start of the first Intifada. Algeria was the first country to officially recognize Palestine as an independent nation. This move was followed by forty other countries, including China, India, Turkey, and most Arab nations. Africa, the Soviet bloc, Central America and Latin America also joined in recognizing Palestine as an independent state.

The Palestinians have been making diplomatic efforts on the international stage for many years. In 2012 they were granted observer status at the United Nations, and in 2011 they became full members of UNESCO. This new status allowed them to join the International Criminal Court in 2015 despite objections from the United States and Israel. Some European countries like Sweden have recognized Palestine as a sovereign state under certain conditions.

Countries such as Spain, Ireland Malta Slovenia and France have hinted at their willingness to recognize Palestine under certain circumstances. These efforts reflect the ongoing impasse in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and have strained relations between some European countries and Israel.

The Palestinian Authority has restarted its bid to become a full member state of the United Nations after gaining recognition from 137 out of 193 UN states with few exceptions in Western Europe, North America Australia Japan South Korea.

In conclusion recognizing a Palestinian state is not only a unilateral decision but also reflects diplomatic efforts made by Palestinians on an international stage for many years despite opposition from some countries like US Israel.
