Sources say AAC considering Tim Pernetti as next commissioner with sports background

New AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti: Bringing Diverse Experience and Fresh Perspectives to the Growing Conference

Tim Pernetti is reportedly set to become the next commissioner of the American Athletic Conference, as per sources from ESPN. With his diverse background in college sports, television and on-campus experience, Pernetti is a valuable candidate for the role.

Pernetti currently serves as president of IMG Academy and has previously held positions as athletic director at Rutgers and chief business officer for New York City FC in Major League Soccer. His appointment comes at a crucial time for the AAC, which has recently added several new teams to the conference. Mike Aresco, who has been commissioner since the league’s inception 11 years ago, will be stepping down.

Despite a setback in his early career involving a scandal involving the basketball coach’s abusive behavior at Rutgers, Pernetti has continued to excel in the industry. His diverse background and experience make him a valuable candidate for this role. The trend of non-traditional hires in commissioner positions is growing, with Pernetti being one of the latest examples of this shift.

The AAC currently has a television contract with ESPN that will last until the 2031-32 academic year. Pernetti’s appointment is expected to bring fresh perspectives and ideas to the conference as it continues to grow and expand its reach.
