Navajo County’s New 100-mile Open-Access Dark Fiber Middle-Mile Network to Boost Broadband Access and Economic Growth

Navajo County, located in north eastern Arizona, is set to enhance its broadband quality with the construction of a new 100-mile open-access dark fiber middle-mile network. The project will provide reliable, affordable internet for residents and businesses in the county and beyond.

The partnership between Navajo County and eX² Technology, a communications infrastructure group, has resulted in the development of this new network. The agreement to construct the middle-mile fiber optic network will serve as an economic growth engine for the county by providing high-speed internet access to underserved communities.

Navajo County Chairman Jason E. Whiting expressed excitement about the partnership with eX² Technology, stating that it is a result of the county’s Broadband Strategic Plan commissioned in early 2021. The plan aims to create significant opportunities for underprivileged residents by delivering high-quality broadband services throughout the region.

Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority, expressed gratitude to Governor Katie Hobbs and all partners involved in the initiative. She noted that this open-access backbone will interlink with other networks in the region, including Arizona and New Mexico. This will ensure continuity of operations for years to come while also providing reliable connectivity for residents and businesses across Navajo County.

Jay Jorgensen, chief operating officer of eX² Technology, believes that this project will have a positive impact on the local economy by enabling small businesses to expand their reach and access new markets online. He also notes that it will improve healthcare services through telehealth capabilities and provide better educational opportunities through increased internet access.

The Arizona Commerce Authority granted Navajo County $9.7 million in Rural Arizona Broadband Development Grant funds, along with $10 million from the American Rescue Plan Act for broadband expansion. This funding has enabled eX² Technology to begin construction on the new network.

Overall, this new network is expected to play a critical role in enhancing broadband access throughout north eastern Arizona and beyond. With reliable connectivity at their fingertips, residents and businesses can take advantage of new opportunities for growth and prosperity.
