Sunday of chaos and inconvenience for travellers as trains go on strike

National Strike Causes Delays and Cancellations Across Italian Railways

In a day marked by delays, cancellations, and inconveniences, a significant portion of the railway network was disrupted due to a national strike by staff from Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper, and Trenord. The strike, which lasted until 2 am on Monday, was organized by the PDM/PDB National Assembly comprising engine personnel and on-board staff who were demanding better working conditions. The lack of guarantee bands due to the public holiday made things worse for passengers.

Despite the chaos on the railways, Italo’s connections remained regular throughout the strike period. However, Trenord reported that only 20% of trains were running as scheduled. In Lombardy, there were many cancellations on all routes including Regional and High-Speed trains. In Rome’s Termini station, dozens of trains both regional and high-speed were canceled while others ran with delays of over 30 minutes. Prior to the strike, Trenitalia had sent out over 75 thousand text messages and emails to inform passengers about potential disruptions and their call center was handling an increased volume of calls nearly triple the usual on a Sunday.

In addition to this, in Campania, the on-board staff of regional railway transport also went on strike with regional unions demanding better working conditions for the Trenitalia Dbr Campania Crew Staff. This led to a 23-hour abstention from work affecting services in the region. Despite these challenges and disruptions caused by the strikes, efforts were made to provide assistance to passengers in need of information at major stations.
