MSMS: How a School’s Partnership with Mississippi University for Women Has Produced Some of the Best High School Students in the State

The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science (MSMS) has been located on the campus of Mississippi University for Women in Columbus for over 35 years. Established in 1987, MSMS has become known for producing some of the best and brightest high school juniors and seniors in the state. During a recent Town and Tower Meeting at MUW, speakers emphasized the unique opportunities that MSMS students have and the strong bond that the school shares with Columbus and Mississippi University for Women.

Ginger Tedder, the Executive Director and an alum of the school, Emma Richardson, an original faculty member and author of a history of the school, and Dr. Thomas Easterling, the current Director of Academic Affairs, all spoke about how MSMS has benefited from its close relationship with the community. The school’s programs like ‘Tales From the Crypt’, ‘8 of May’ program, and various educational outreach initiatives have been made possible by this relationship.

One of MSMS’ biggest strengths is its diversity. Students are exposed to different cultures while studying at MSMS which broadens their understanding of the world. This exposure brings these perspectives into their education at MUW and beyond. Town and Tower’s mission is to foster relationships between Mississippi University for Women, Columbus, Lowndes County, and Columbus Air Force Base, further strengthening ties between MSMS and its local community.

Overall, it is clear that MSMS has thrived thanks to its location on MUW’s campus in Columbus. Its strong bond with both MUW administration as well as local community has allowed it to provide unique opportunities to students while also expanding their perspectives on diverse cultures.
