Metso Supplies Technology for Copper Electrorefinery in the United States

On Monday, November 20, Jane Bentham of the Global Mining Review published an article about Freeport-McMoRan’s recent decision to award Metso a contract for the delivery of a tankhouse material handling solution to their El Paso electrorefinery in Texas, US. The order value is estimated to be over €10 million and will be booked in the Minerals segment’s 4Q23 orders received. Metso’s scope of delivery includes Outotec Anode Preparation and Cathode Stripping Machines, both based on proven designs that ensure high safety and long-term reliability.

The machines are equipped with modern robotic electrode handling technology that optimizes layout and material handling efficiency in the existing refinery. Mikko Rantaharju, Vice President of Hydrometallurgy business line at Metso, expressed his satisfaction with this collaboration with Freeport-McMoRan on this important project. He stated, “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Freeport-McMoRan on this critical project. We have confidence in our technology’s ability to deliver high efficiency and quality copper production in the El Paso copper electrorefinery after modernization. The solution combines our extensive experience in similar equipment with cutting-edge robotics technology to meet the tankhouse’s material handling requirements.”
