Mercy Health Takes Action to Address Blood Shortage through Blood Drive in Warren, Ohio
The ongoing blood shortage issue is being addressed by Mercy Health in Warren, Ohio, through a blood drive next week. Despite the fact that many Americans are eligible to donate blood, only 3% actually do so. This is why health officials are urging the community to step up and donate at a local hospital.
During busy holiday weekends, hospitals experience an increase in trauma cases, which puts a strain on their inventory of blood and blood products. For example, platelets have a shelf life of only three days after they are received in the lab, while a unit of blood has a shelf life of about four to five weeks. As such, laboratories and blood banks cannot increase their inventory ahead of time.
