New USF Course on Mental Health in the Workplace Draws over 4,500 Enrollments

Mental Health in the Workplace: USF Introduces Free Online Course to Support Working Professionals

In the United States, mental health issues in the workplace have become a significant concern that affects many individuals. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 76% of workers reported experiencing at least one symptom of a mental health condition in 2021. To address this issue, the University of South Florida introduced an online course called Mental Health & Wellness in the Workplace.

This course was designed in collaboration with the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay and USF’s College of Behavioral and Community Sciences. Over 4,500 working professionals from top companies nationwide and globally enrolled in the course during its first year.

The primary objective of the course is to educate participants on how to effectively deal with mental health challenges, promote a healthy team environment, and provide support to employees. Through the course, individuals learn to recognize mental and behavioral issues, including topics like trauma and suicide, which are on the rise in today’s society.

Dean Julie Serovich emphasizes that addressing mental health issues is crucial, especially during times of crisis. The course is offered free of charge with no intention of generating profits but making a meaningful impact on individuals.

The Mental Health & Wellness in the Workplace course is open to anyone who wishes to gain valuable knowledge and skills to address mental health challenges in their workplace.

It consists of seven two-hour sessions that cover critical topics such as communication skills, stress management techniques, recognizing signs of depression and anxiety disorders, creating a supportive work environment for employees with mental illnesses, and much more. By enrolling in this course, individuals can improve their understanding of mental health issues while also learning practical strategies for supporting themselves and others in maintaining a healthy work environment.
