Max Scherzer had an impressive start for the Texas Rangers on Friday night against the Baltimore Orioles. In the game, he surpassed Greg Maddux on Major League Baseball’s all-time strikeout list by reaching 3,372 strikeouts with his strikeout of Ramón Urías in the second inning. He ended the game with four strikeouts but suffered a 2-1 defeat, leaving him just 18 strikeouts behind former teammate Justin Verlander.
The MLB all-time strikeout list is topped by Nolan Ryan with 5,714 strikeouts, followed by Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, Steve Carlton, and Bert Blyleven rounding out the top five. However, Verlander recently surpassed Maddux to claim the 10th spot with 3,393 strikeouts, just behind Walter Johnson’s 3,509 in ninth place. Scherzer is now closing in on Verlander’s total and the two pitchers might continue to compete against each other as they climb up the all-time rankings.
Other active pitchers like Clayton Kershaw, Chris Sale, and Gerrit Cole are also on the all-time strikeout list but are far behind Scherzer and Verlander. Kershaw currently sits at No. 21 with 2,944 strikeouts, Sale at No. 56 with 2,307, and Cole at No. 71 with 2
