Manny Pacquiao, a multi-weight world champion, has been endorsed by the WBC to fight for a welterweight world title at the age of 45. Despite announcing his retirement after his 2021 defeat to Yordenis Ugas, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has left the door open for Pacquiao to return to world championship action.
In 2009, Ricky Hatton faced a devastating one-punch knockout defeat against Pacquiao. “Manny Pacquiao is timeless. He’s a legend,” Sulaiman told Sky Sports. “We have great precedent of former champions coming back as long as they pass all the medical examinations. As a former champion and a legend, he has the possibility of fighting for the WBC championship.”
Pacquiao expressed his interest in fighting Mario Barrios, who currently holds the vacant WBC welterweight title. Negotiations for the fight are still ongoing. If successful, Pacquiao’s return to the ring would be sensational as he won his first world championship more than two decades ago and remains a competitive and formidable fighter despite being away from boxing for some time.
