Legendary Marta Announces Retirement from International Soccer: What Lies Ahead for Brazilian Women’s Soccer and the Olympics?

Brazilian soccer star Marta, who currently plays for Orlando Pride, announced in an exclusive interview with CNN Brasil that she will retire from international soccer this year. At 38 years old, Marta holds the record for Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer, male or female, with an impressive 115 goals and has participated in six World Cup tournaments. If selected for the Brazilian squad at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Marta could make her sixth appearance at the Games.

Marta expressed her feelings about retiring, stating that this year will mark her last with the national team and beyond 2025, there will be no more Marta in the national team. However, she seems at peace with this decision and optimistic about the future of Brazilian women’s soccer and the young athletes in the team. She highlighted the positive developments and talent among the younger generation of athletes.

Throughout her career, Marta has received numerous accolades, including winning the FIFA Player of the Year award an unprecedented six times. She also boasts a collection of titles such as the Women’s Champions League, the Copa Libertadores Femenina, and has been awarded the Golden Boot and Golden Ball at the 2007 Women’s World Cup. A notable achievement is her record of scoring at five World Cups, with 17 goals in total, which is the highest across men’s and women’s soccer.

Despite her illustrious career, one area where Marta fell short was winning major global titles with Brazil’s national team. She came close three times – losing in the 2007 Women’s World Cup final and two Olympic gold medal matches. The upcoming Paris Olympics could potentially be her final chance to achieve this milestone.

As we approach July for Olympic Games , Marta’s retirement signifies an end to an era in Brazilian soccer . Her impact and influence on not only Brazil but also on international soccer have been immense ,and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of female athletes .
