Charlotte Hornets have decided to shut down LaMelo Ball for the rest of the season. The team has been struggling with a record of 18-54 and this move is not surprising considering their poor performance. Ball suffered a right ankle injury during a game against the Magic days after Thanksgiving while landing awkwardly after a play involving Paolo Banchero. Unfortunately, this is the same ankle that he had surgery on towards the end of the previous season.
Prior to his injury, Ball was having one of his best seasons, averaging 25.9 points and 8.6 assists per game, with a 3-point shooting percentage of 38.9%. His season-ending injury has raised concerns about his ability to stay healthy and play consistently, leading some within the league to speculate that the Hornets may explore trading him due to his injury history and large contract he is set to start next season. However, finding a suitable trade partner willing to meet Charlotte’s demands may prove challenging.
The Hornets will now have the opportunity to see how rookie Brandon Miller can complement LaMelo Ball on the court under new coaching staff in the upcoming training camp. While it may take some time for this process to fully unfold, it could pave the way for a more successful future for both players and the team as a whole.
