Kidney-Related Issues Prompt Major Recall of Health Supplements in Japan

Japan’s Ministry of Health has ordered the recall of health supplements containing red yeast rice, or benikoji, after two deaths and over 100 hospitalizations were reported in connection with the supplements. The company responsible for these products is Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, based in Osaka.

The recall includes not only Kobayashi’s products but also more than 40 other products from different companies that contain benikoji. These include miso paste, crackers, and vinegar dressing. The Ministry of Health has instructed local authorities to collect information on any health damage linked to these products.

Health Minister Keizo Takemi has called on Kobayashi Pharmaceutical to provide information promptly and urged the public to stop using the supplements immediately. The company has issued an apology and advised users not to consume the products in the future.

Concerns have been raised about the safety of red yeast rice as a dietary supplement due to its potential side effects on kidneys and other organs. Medical studies suggest that red yeast rice can be effective in lowering cholesterol levels but may also come with a risk of organ damage, depending on its composition.

This recall is significant as it involves domestically produced supplements in Japan. While all the products were made in Japan, it remains unknown if any of the raw materials used were imported from other countries. The authorities are urging people to avoid consuming any products that contain benikoji until further notice to prevent any further health issues from arising.
