Kern Public Health Alerts Users of Harmful Blue-Green Cyanotoxin Algae in Lake Isabella

Kern County Public Health is urging individuals to exercise caution when using Lake Isabella for recreational activities. Recent water samples taken from 17 locations around the lake have revealed potentially harmful blue-green cyanotoxin algae in the Hanning Flat area.

These cyanobacteria are capable of producing toxins that can be harmful to humans, pets, livestock, and wildlife. Children and dogs are particularly vulnerable due to their smaller body size. Symptoms of cyanobacteria toxins include eye irritation, skin rash, mouth ulcers, vomiting, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms.

Health advisory signs have been posted around the lake to warn people of the potential dangers of harmful algal blooms. Officials have also provided guidelines on how to protect oneself from these blooms, such as following advisories, avoiding algae and scum in the water and on shore, keeping a close eye on children and pets, and avoiding letting them go into the water or consume algae accumulations.

For fishermen, it is recommended that they dispose of guts properly and clean fillets with tap water or bottled water before cooking to avoid exposure to potential harm. More information about harmful algal blooms can be found on Kern Public Health’s website.
