CBS Sports pinpoints potential obstacle for Chiefs in 2024

Kansas City Chiefs Defense: The Unsung Hero in Two Straight Super Bowl Victories

The Kansas City Chiefs had a successful season, winning their second straight Super Bowl despite having one of their weakest teams during the Patrick Mahomes era. However, the defense was the strongest it had ever been while Mahomes was in Kansas City. Despite this, the team had to make tough decisions during the offseason.

One of these decisions was trading L’Jarius Sneed to Tennessee, which has impacted their cornerback depth. According to Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, this loss now makes the Chiefs cornerback depth the team’s biggest red flag. Benjamin noted that if Trent McDuffie hadn’t emerged as a versatile starter in the secondary, Sneed wouldn’t have been traded. Now, the spotlight falls on new running mate Joshua Williams, who has only six career starts under his belt and puts pressure on the safeties.

Despite this change in their cornerback group, the Chiefs have a history of success under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Trent McDuffie has become a lockdown starter early in his career, providing stability in the secondary. Joshua Williams, a fourth-round pick in 2022, has been a valuable depth piece for the team during their recent Super Bowl runs.

As the offseason continues and articles discussing trades and roster changes circulate, one thing remains certain: The Chiefs trust Steve Spagnuolo to prepare their defense for success. This is evident in t-shirts worn by members of defense that read “In Spags We Trust.”
