Aaron Judge, the 2022 American League MVP, recently experienced a career first on the field during a game against the Detroit Tigers. In the seventh inning of the game, Judge was ejected for arguing a called third strike by home plate umpire Ryan Blakney. Despite being known for his calm demeanor, Judge took umbrage with a fastball from pitcher Tyler Holton that he believed was outside the strike zone.
After expressing his disagreement with the call, Judge walked back to the dugout only to be ejected by Blakney. The strike zone graphic indicated that the pitch was on the edge of home plate but outside the zone, but Blakney thought otherwise. Despite being upset about being ejected, Judge had a productive game and ended with a 2-for-4 performance and an RBI.
The Yankees went on to win the game 5-3. Interestingly, this was the first time since Don Mattingly in 1994 that a Yankees captain had been ejected from a game.
