Jude Bellingham cleared to play for England after Uefa investigation over inappropriate gesture.
Jude Bellingham has been cleared to play for England in their upcoming match against Switzerland, despite being charged by Uefa for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct.” The midfielder faced an investigation after making a gesture while celebrating his goal against Slovakia in the last-16 tie.
The incident occurred when Bellingham was seen shouting “Who else?!” and making a gesture towards the England fans after scoring. He later explained on social media that it was an inside joke towards some close friends who were at the game, showing respect for the Slovakian team.
Gareth Southgate will have Bellingham at his disposal for the crucial match, as the midfielder could have faced a more severe punishment. Uefa fined Bellingham €30,000 and suspended him for one competition match, which is not immediately enforced but subject to a probationary period of one year. This decision means Bellingham will still be available to play in the quarter-final against Switzerland.
The incident also led to England’s Football Association being fined for crowd disturbances and the lighting of fireworks during the game. Despite this setback, Southgate remains confident that his team can overcome any obstacles and come out on top in their upcoming match against Switzerland.
