John James Wertz, a 55-year-old resident of Altoona, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday. Born in the same city to late parents William B. Sr. and Judy Jean Wertz, he leaves behind a daughter, Amber “Nikki” Williams of Altoona; a son, Justin James Wertz and wife Hatty of Altoona; six grandchildren: Haley, Abby, Jarek, James, Savannah, Jaise and Reiley; and four siblings: William B. Wertz Jr. (Brenda), Kevin Wertz Sr. (Carmen), Pamela Wertz (Kristin) and Shaun Wertz (Lisa).
A veteran of the U.S. Army with extended time in Panama, John retired from the State Correctional Institution in Chester as a sergeant in 2015. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and riding motorcycles. He also enjoyed playing bingo with his daughter and was a huge fan of the Steelers. But above all else, he cherished spending time with his grandchildren whom he adored playing games with them while going on adventures around town or playing Pokemon Go together. One of his greatest joys was cooking special meals for his family during holidays to make them feel special.
