Israel Prepares for Ground Offensive in Rafah, Amid Political and Safety Concerns

Preparations for Operation Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip are ongoing in Israel. According to reports, the operation is expected to begin “very soon”. A senior Israeli security official told Reuters that the Israeli army is fully prepared to launch the operation and is awaiting political approval to proceed.

The ground offensive in Rafah has been presented to American officials and other regional agencies, with the Israeli broadcaster Kan reporting that it will be carried out in phases, dividing the city into defined areas. Before advancing into each area, the army (IDF) will inform the population so that civilians can evacuate shelters and homes in time.

In preparation for the operation, two reserve brigades have been mobilized from northern Israel to the border with Lebanon. Additionally, two brigades of reservists have returned to southern Gaza to continue the defense and attack mission under the command of the 99th Division.

The IDF has approved a new plan for Operation Rafah after three previous plans were suggested. The US government has expressed opposition to the operation without a credible plan to protect civilians, but Israeli officials are adamant about entering Rafah to complete their mission and potentially address issues related to hostages.

Three senior Israeli officials visited Egypt recently to discuss concerns about entering Rafah with Egyptian intelligence officials. Despite warnings from Egypt about potential harm on civilians due to its proximity, Israel remains committed to carrying out its mission while ensuring civilian safety as much as possible.
