Iran Prepares for Second Presidential Elections After Tragic Plane Crash: What to Expect

The Islamic Republic of Iran will hold the second round of early presidential elections on July 5th, following the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a plane crash on May 19th. In the first round held on June 28th, Masoud Pezeshkian, considered a reformer, and conservative Said Jalili emerged as the top candidates. Pezeshkian received about 42% of the votes while Jalili received about 39%.

Officially, the voter turnout for the first round was reported as 40%, but there are doubts about its accuracy, with some suggesting it could have been much lower. The conservative candidate has a better chance in the second round, as voters who supported other conservative politicians in the first round have no alternative.
